“…on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:18b -19 NIV
Prayer changes things. Prayer changes people. Thank you for praying for the many people you don’t know who are being reached through the efforts of our Missionaries and their partners. Many are giving their hearts to Christ. Many are being strengthened in their walk. Some are called to ministry. We have new leadership from each of the groups of people we serve. Please keep praying for transformation through God’s grace. Please pray for additional opportunities to share the Gospel in tangible ways. Please follow our OnMission Monthly Prayer Guide (available online at TheEvangelicalChurch.org) to guide you in your prayers for missions. Please continue to pray for all Missionaries serving with our partner agencies; OMS, WGM, Wycliffe, and Hope Teams International.
Touch The World Through Prayer was the name of one book written by Dr. Wesley Duell in which he shares how prayer shaped his more than 50 years of fruitful Missionary service in India and as he served at the helm of OMS. Prayer is an indispensable tool in places known and far off, in cultures familiar and strange to us. Without it we cannot overcome the enemy. Without it we are limited to our own human strength, which we often grossly overestimate. With Prayer, we employ God’s strength, which we often grossly underestimate. With prayer, we can accomplish much when we are diligent and persevere.
Last week my wife Pat and I had the privilege of attending the Pacific Conference Ministerial Retreat. We were greatly impressed to hear and spend time with Dr. James Banks, who has authored many books on prayer including Praying with Jesus, Praying Together, Praying the Prayers of the Bible, and Praying for the Prodigal. Over the last few years, he has helped us to transform our prayers. Please take the time to visit his website at JamesBanks.org to learn more about powerful effective prayer for your life and ministry.
I believe strongly that every church should have some involvement in reaching others for Christ in their local communities, and around the world. We are living in an unprecedented time where God has placed us inside the middle of the biggest movement of people groups around the world, including our own communities. People in our churches are more aware of what is going on in the world because technology enables them travel all over the world, and communicate with people everywhere. We have opportunities we never had before.
Since the election season began, through now, we have seen how the world handles things. With evil in their hearts, they bring great harm and chaos. There is no peace without Christ. And the world is clearly in revolt against Him and His people. We must pray for the grace of God to settle in on our own hearts, beginning with one another in the church and our families, so that we can pray effectively for the world around us. It isn’t about us; it is about Him.
There are some specific ways which we can pray.
Prayer for revival in our own hearts. Get right with God and others.
For opportunities to come to us in our communities and to our Missionaries and their partners.
Pray for our Missionaries’ protection as they represent the Kingdom and the U.S. by association.
Pray for openness to immigrants in our communities who are fearful, even those who are here legally.
Pray for our government … there is no shortage of need on all sides of everything.
Persevere in Prayer for your friends and family members who do not yet know Christ; you are a Missionary in their lives.
Pray with fervor because the power of prayer is greater than we know.
Pray with your family and especially with your children and grandchildren, for peace and well-being in our fractured culture.
Together we can not only Touch the World Through Prayer, but we can Change the World by the work of His Holy Spirit.
“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” – James 5:16 NLT
